What to Expect in the Examination - Paper 0/1B

Paper 0/1B is administered on day one and is only 30 minutes long. The paper consists of four compulsory short-answer questions based on Module 1 only.

This is the listening paper, the shortest paper, but it is just as important as the others. You will listen to a piece of expository, argumentative, descriptive or narrative discourse read by an oral examiner. You will then respond, in writing, to the questions.

For this paper you will need to revise literary devices, especially:
  • similes and metaphors
  • onomatopoeia
  • personification.

Sound devices such as alliteration, contrast and symbolism are also popularly used. For this paper, you will be given an answer sheet with questions. You are advised to read the questions thoroughly. They will help prepare you to identify the meaning in the passage which your examiner will read to you.

Brush up on your summary skills as well, because very often the listening paper asks the candidate to say what the main idea of the passage is in fifteen to twenty words.
The listening comprehension tests aspects of Module 1 – Gathering and Processing Information (see also the question and sample answers).

The maximum number of marks for this paper is 15.
